Traditional orthodontic braces require the application of braces (technically ‘brackets’) on each individual tooth, thanks to a specific adhesive. A metal ‘wire’ (arch) that perfectly follows the shape of the dental arch is then inserted through the braces. Since the arch has elastic properties, it can exert a force on the braces and thus on the teeth so that they align more and more week after week.
Braces can be made of metal or ceramic (in the colour of the tooth if you prefer a less visible appliance). You are required to be consistent in keeping monthly appointments with your orthodontist to modify the wire tension of the arch each month as needed.
The realignment therapy lasts on average from six months (for the simplest cases) to two years.

Since it is a fixed appliance, you don’t have to worry about removing the appliance at mealtimes.
If you care a lot about aesthetics: in this case, it is better to choose clear Invisalign® aligners;
If you are very busy and not sure you can keep up with monthly appointment;
If you are prone to frequent mucosal lesions (such as mouth ulcers);
If you want to maintain clean teeth at all times: it can be laborious to brush the teeth between ‘braces’. In this case, Invisalign® clear orthodontic therapy is ideal.

At the end of traditional orthodontic treatment, you will receive rigid, transparent retainers which must be worn every night (or every other night) to ensure that your teeth alignment remains the same forever.
Sometimes, your orthodontist may recommend splinting to replace one of the two aforementioned retainers. Splinting is a metal (or fibreglass and resin) wire that is fixed with composite resin to the inside of the teeth from canine to canine, usually on the lower arch.
Warning: never stop wearing your retainer, because teeth always tend to shift over time (even the ones of people who haven’t worn braces).
