Application of fluoride gel

For prevention to be truly effective against caries, one must not forget to periodically reinforce tooth enamel with fluoride. Topical application of fluoride is, to date, the only way to fully enjoy all the benefits of this agent, in a completely safe way.

Everyday we absorb fluoride through what we drink and eat, but only a very small percentage reaches our teeth. In fact, the only fluoride that gets to our teeth to strengthen them is released by the salivary glands in our saliva. We recommend periodic application of fluoride to maintain the beauty and health of your teeth.

Fluoride application: the only effective and safe technique, for adults and children

Until not so many years ago, fluoride was administered orally by means of tablets or drops to increase the daily intake; this method, however, as already mentioned, is not particularly effective. Little fluoride reaches the teeth since the body must first assimilate it and then release it in the saliva. In order to have useful concentrations in the saliva, one would have to ingest large quantities, with the risk of harmful accumulations elsewhere in the body. This practice was particularly common among developing children: many paediatricians recommended pink fluoride tablets (which you may have also taken). Recent studies, however, have found that introducing fluoride at a developmental age through drops or tablets can cause fluorosis, an intoxication that manifests itself in the appearance of white or brown stains on tooth enamel. With high doses, even harmful accumulations at a skeletal level can occur. Fluoride should therefore only and exclusively be administered topically: fluoride gel containing the active ingredient is placed directly on the affected area, i.e. on tooth enamel.
At White Smile Milano you can benefit from this precious active ingredient in a completely safe way, because fluoride only goes where it is needed, for as long as it is needed!

Fluoride gel

The fluoride gel we use at White Smile Milano is made with amine fluoride with a 1.25 percent concentration of fluoride. It is 300% more concentrated than what is found in normal adult toothpaste.

Fluoride is deposited on the teeth and remineralises the enamel, so its topical application is particularly suitable to:

  • prevent painful caries: it counteracts the corrosive action of acids produced by bacteria and inhibits bacterial replication
  • protect sensitive tooth collars because it forms an insulating barrier against thermal stimuli. Moreover, fluoride is eliminated very slowly and remains on the tooth for days in sufficient concentrations to ensure its protection

Our dentist or dental hygienist performs the application of fluoride gel with a thin rubber tray that keeps the gel in contact with the teeth, even reaching into the interdental spaces. The setting time is about 5 minutes. It is important to avoid eating and drinking during the half-hour following the fluoride application so that the remaining gel continues to act.

We recommend doing a fluoride gel application every 6 months, so that teeth are periodically strengthened.

Fluoride application: when to do it

Our team of professionals will explain and motivate the choice of this treatment. If you have never done it, then you might feel the need to reinforce the enamel, especially if you have abraded collars or if your tooth breaks while chewing.

Sometimes the teeth give warning signs such as sensitivity of the collars or discomfort due to caries, which must be heeded. In addition, some bad habits – such as nail biting – can weaken teeth which fluoride gel can help counteract.

A fluoride application is recommended immediately if:

  • it has not been done for more than 6 months
  • the teeth are weak due to a genetic predisposition: the enamel has a lower mineral content than normal (this can be seen by the presence of chalky-looking white spots)
  • the patient suffers from acidosis or gastro-oesophageal reflux: enamel is more easily attacked because the pH of saliva is lowered and no longer neutralises the acids produced by bacteria
  • it is a time of great stress and teeth are clenched tightly and/or nails are bitten; these are not part of the normal activities of the teeth, which therefore work harder than they should, creating the need to strengthen the enamel
  • the collars are uncovered due to gum recession: fluoride is also deposited on the uncovered part of the tooth, the root, and creates a barrier against the thermal stimuli of cold and heat
  • you are wearing a traditional orthodontic appliance, so it is more difficult to keep your teeth completely free of plaque and bacteria

The real effectiveness that fluoride has on teeth should not be underestimated. It only takes 5 minutes to keep your teeth strong and healthy!

Caution! For the treatment to be really effective, the fluoride must reach the entire enamel. For this to be possible, the tooth must be clean and the interdental spaces
